Without a doubt, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector has exploded in Jamaica. The top-class workforce has been lauded for why so many global business giants are flocking the island for service. Hence, more and more BPO centers are establishing roots across the tiny island.
Since 2015 Jamaica has been experiencing a steady growth in its involvement in the global Business Process Outsourcing Sector (BPO). Jamaica is ideally positioned for outsourcing. The island’s nearness to the USA and subsequent similarities in time zone may have been what initially drew investors here.
The BPO workforce in Jamaica has also grown exponentially in the last few years and continues to do so. It is said that the high quality of their service delivery is to be credited for the demand by companies worldwide. Critical certifications such as HIPAA, ISO, SOC 11, and PCI have made Jamaica one of the most suitable places to outsource even very delicate operations. These services include healthcare, insurance, finance and accounting, human resources, customer service, and technical services.
With its diverse workforce, the sector employs university students, unemployed, and professionals part-time and full-time. Accountants, linguist, legal professionals, technological analysts, among others; are all finding their place in the BPO sector in Jamaica. According to the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) (July 2021), the number of jobs in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector increased by 15 percent over the past year, with 44,000 people employed in the sector as of June 30, 2021.
The advancing of the sector in Jamaica is also due in significant part to the support of the Jamaican government. The government has taken quite an interest in the outsourcing sector, developing and implementing a wide variety of training programs. The Global Services Sector (GSS) project, in particular, is intended to upskill the BPO labor force. It has enabled individuals to take up positions in the BPO sector, ranging from customer representatives, trainers, managers, and senior managers.
Jamaica has much to offer companies that wish to outsource. With the increase in BPO companies, many services are being offered to the world from the island. The country now has an excellent infrastructure, with several buildings dedicated to the sector and more going up across the island. Fortune 500 companies and other large organizations in North America and Europe have chosen Jamaica as the place to conduct their business. United Health Group, Xerox, Delta Airlines, and Vistaprint are only a few of the reputable companies that recognize the value of outsourcing their operations to Jamaica.
Clearly, Jamaica is on the cusp of greatness in outsourcing. The country can already be considered a hub, and this could be just the beginning.
