Ever since the first case of COVID-19, there has not been a single country, industry, place, or person that has not experienced its global impact. Almost all of us were forced to become more forward-thinking in coping and enjoying life.
Now we are more than a year in, surviving, and looking forward to what opening-up will be like. Once again, our adaptability is tested as we prepare to come out of pandemic mode and return to normalcy. This time the real test will be how to transition from lockdown to being outside.
Recently, some of our team members shared their concerns about health and fitness after the pandemic. It caused us to realize that returning to physical activity after COVID-19 could be more challenging than it seems. Here are a few tips to help you return to physical fitness after the COVID-19 pandemic.
5 Tips to Returning to Physical Activity After the Pandemic
- Tell yourself you got this! Remember that it begins in your mind. You are the same person who more than survived the pandemic and several months of uncertainty. I bet you did not know you were so strong! So, get ready to take it one day at a time.
- Take tiny steps. If you are not ready or able to go out to a gym or fitness club, start rebuilding at home. Do simple exercises at home, or signup for virtual gym sessions. Many trainers traded their brick and mortars at the start of the pandemic for a virtual fitness studio. I guarantee you they will be integrating their virtual and in-person sessions as the restrictions are lifted.
- Do not stay away too long. Your mind may still be in protector mode, and that is okay. Now is the time to allow yourself to enjoy life safely. Keep observing the rules that are still in place, but do not restrict yourself unnecessarily. You have already WON; now, you only need to do it. Be bold and book your fitness sessions, and be sure to show up and WIN. Apply the discipline you developed during the lockdown, and you will be on your way!
- Try something new. Trying out a new fitness activity may spark your interest and enthusiasm for fitness again. Consider doing swimming, cycling, dance classes, etc. You may end up learning something new about yourself in the process.
- Team up. Talk to your friends about their fitness plans; schedule and do walks, runs, and workout sessions together. That will help keep you accountable and remind you that you are not going through the change alone.
The COVID-19 experience taught us many things. So, as you transition from inside to outside, remember to be patient with yourself and enjoy being fit again!
