If you are a senior who survived the stay at home order, BGB is awarding you a SUPER SENIOR’s Outside Badge!

As the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic change, governments are permitting seniors outside again. According to Click-on Detroit local news (June 2021), “People living in assisted living facilities can now come and go as they please and are reconnecting in person with their loved ones.”

However, while some seniors celebrate, others are reluctant even to take a stroll outside again. From the very start of COVID-19, seniors seemed to be at the highest risk. Although social distance rules may be loosening, some seniors have stayed inside since the virus may still be present in their community. Therefore, group gatherings and close physical contact mat still be unsafe for them.

If you are ready to collect your badge and enjoy socializing again, remember you survived the pandemic; you deserve to socialize. But, just before you go through the door, here are a few other reminders:

  • Do get vaccinated. Going out safe is your responsibility.
  • Do your best to observe the rules.
  • Meet others in open spaces such as gardens, parks, etc. There you will have adequate space if you think you need it.
  • Be sure to inform someone of where you’re headed.

If you are not yet ready to venture outside, not to worry, you can still socialize. In fact, now may be an excellent time to learn other ways you can interact with friends, family – and possibly strangers (under the right conditions). Technology has made it much easier for us to socialize virtually, and there are many resources to help you learn quickly. Here are three ways you can enjoy socializing after COVID-19 until you are ready to go out again.

  • Ways Seniors Can Virtually Socially Interact After COVID-19

  1. Video chatting is one of the best-identified socializing substitutes since social distancing. Next time you do your gardening, call up a friend and show them what you are doing.
  2. Make a phone call. When all else fails, nothing beats a phone call. Place the call, and do some catching up. Or watch a movie or TV program with a friend while on the phone.

  1. Start writing: Why not learn to send emails or continue with your preferred pen and paper. You could start, by writing on how you survived the pandemic.

The days and nights of restrictions are nearing an end. Staying home may have bent you, but it could not break you. So, whether you choose to stay inside or go outside, remember to do so safely, enjoying life with those who make you happy!
